Background: Richard is something of a surprise to his family. His brother, father, grandfather too, were al men of the press, all were journalists and his other brother is a lawyer so it was a bit of a surprise when Richard announced he was going to drama school. His mother lectures in English at Oxford so was the only one to be pleased for him. His sister lives in Sydney where she also lectures in English. Deep down Richard feels that he needs to achieve a helluva lot to keep up with them.

Like the rest of them, he veers to the left of centre, abhors the current coalition in the UK but keeps his opinions to himself. His brothers frequently accuse him of sitting on the fence.

He is deep in the closet and likely to stay that way; none of his family knows he is gay and are unlikely to hear it from his lips. He is fiercely ambitious and wants his career to grow and grow, he split up with his long term partner when The Hobbit begun filming, determined not to be held back in any way.
